New Turf, New Team, Same Goal

NEW TURF, NEW TEAM,

SAME GOAL

The Diamonds at Birdville have had a facelift and are ready for great seasons to be played on them.

In the fall, construction on the two new turf fields were underway for both softball and baseball. Displaced most of the fall, the two teams were biting at the bit to try out their new turf. The new fields were completed one month prior to the season starting and both baseball and softball teams have taken full advantage.

Softball started the season on January 12th and have been on a tear since. The Hawks focused on last years sting of missing playoffs and are making an effort to rectify that this year. Last year the Hawks finished 6th in District 7-5A going 5-9 on the season. The Hawks finished 12-18 overall.

Hoping to revamp the team in her second season as Head Coach of the Birdville Softball program is Katie Welborn. Welborn took over the program in Fall of 2022 after her former coach, John Love, retired the spring prior. Welborn returns to her old stomping grounds after playing for the gold and green from 2004-2008. In her inaugural season the Hawks had 6 All-District selections including these returners: Sr. Emma Becraft - 2nd Team All-District, So. Haley Mennenga - Second Team All-District, Sr. Sydney Taylor - Honorable Mention and Jr. Victoria Cano - Honorable Mention.

Although there are a few seasoned Hawks returning, with the loss of five seniors in 2023, there are quite a few new faces as well. Returning players include Seniors Becraft and Taylor, Juniors: Coryn Burris, Valeria Bridges, and Cano and Sophomore: Mennenga. The fresh faces for the Hawks includes Junior Transfer: Riley Wright, Sophomore: Emma Azuelo, and a large Freshman class which include: Reagan Jordan, Avery Rodriguez, Ava Sanders and Evelynn Swartzlander

This small Varsity squad has made quite a splash to start off season already tying their previous season win record. The Hawks started out pre-season play 12-5 with a team batting average of .427. They are lead at the plate by Mennega, Burris and Becraft. Mennega is the lone ranger hitting over .600 followed closely behind by Burris and Becraft hitting .538 and .526 respectively. These three may lead the batting average, but that is not where power ends for the Hawks. There are 7 athletes who are currently hitting over .400 for the Hawks.

On the field the Hawks defense has been amplified by  power in the circle with Freshman Pitcher, Jordan. Jordan is 9-3 on the year so far with 77 K’s and an opponent batting average of .221.

District play starts tonight, March 5th, as the Hawks head to Denton, Texas to take on the Ryan Raiders. Last year the Hawks bested the Raiders both games and hope to achieve the same ending tonight.

Baseball started up exactly one week after softball on January 19th and has been rolling ever since.

Baseball is led by Coach Vance Bonner. Bonner has been a coach for Birdville for 20 years now and at the helm of the Baseball program for 11. An impressive 10 out of those 11 years, the Hawks have reached the playoffs; the farthest round being the Regional Semi-Finals.

Last year Bonner and the Hawks were Bi-District Champions and made it to the Area Round of playoffs. The Hawks were led on the mound by now Texas Tech Red Raider, Parker Hutyra. Along with Hutyra, the majority of last year's team graduated, with the Hawks only returning 6. Seniors: Jayden Nafegar, Drake White and Cole Wall. White and Wall were both named to the District 7-5A Honorable Mentioned Teams.  The other two returning Varsity members are Juniors: Luke Banner and Gabe Winans, both are expected to share mound time for the Hawks. 15 new faces make up the remainder of the 21 Varsity members. Rounding out the team are 6 seniors: Luis Martinez, Nicky Allison, Luke Scarborough, Chris Cazares, and Kyle Martin; 8 juniors: Jake Broom, Manny Gonzalez, Reid Miller, Carter Owens, Paxton Jacinto, Noah Kriesch, Jacob Becker and Sam Mallette; and 2 sophomores: Carsen Blake and Aiden Gray.

Last year the Hawks found success while finishing 20-15 overall and 8-4 in District. Their district record solidified third place and a playoff position. This year the Hawks are finding their new groove with the new team. Currently the Hawks are 4-6-1 with one weekend left to play before District starts on March 13th. The last game the Hawks played showed great promise for the future of the season.

Birdville took on powerhouse Mansfield High School in the last game of the tournament and won outscoring Tigers 5-1. During the game Banner pitched 6 innings with 0 earned runs and the Hawks posted a team batting average of .318.

The Hawks are back in action this weekend in the Drew Medford Classic. Birdville will start the tournament off with Mansfield Legacy and Arlington High School. Wednesday, the Hawks will start the journey to playoffs when they face Denton Ryan at Denton Ryan before facing the same opponent on home turf Thursday at 7:00 pm

The new fields are gorgeous, but you won't want to miss the teams playing on them this season.
