WRESTLING BRINGS HOME DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP

Birdville wrestling has been on a tear through season racking up team and individual wins. But every dual and tri was leading to the District 5-5A tournament.

The tournament was held on home soil and the stage was set for the Hawks to show up in force. They did.

Last season Coach Lujan led 5 boys and 6 girls to the regional qualifier. After graduating most of them, Lujan has rallied his team and this year he will be taking 20 qualifiers.

At the district tournament, Birdville Women finished 5th as a team while the Men’s Wrestling team took home 1st Place and a District Championship. The men out scored the runner-ups by a significant margin at 42 points.

The Hawks qualified 20 athletes to the Regional Championship Tournament; 8 female wrestlers and 12 male wrestlers. Out of those 20 regional qualifiers there were three individual District Champions. Triniti Casteel was the sole female District Champion from Birdville. Reese Bradford and Waleed Khairi both clinched District Championships in their weight classes.

Khairi has been a staple for Hawk Wrestling the past four years. His freshman year he wrestled an abbreviated season due to Covid. Despite not having a full four seasons, Khairi is the first wrestler in Hawk history to lock down 100 individual wins. He looks to continue his dominance through regionals and all the way to state.

Coach Keener was also honored at the tournament being named Assistant Coach of the Year for District 5-5A.

Birdville will take all 20 qualifiers to the Regional Championship at Frisco Independence High School this Friday and Saturday. Finalists from this Tournament will be STATE BOUND!

Good luck to our Hawks on the mat, we are all cheering for you!
